| Barricades: Proper Use of Barricades and Fencing |
Whenever construction threatens to harm vehicles or pedestrians, it is important to put up barricades and fencing. Barricades and fencing serve a few purposes. They alert people in the area that construction is taking place, which ensures that drivers and pedestrians use greater caution. Proper barricading and fencing prevent people from approaching construction sites where they may be hurt. Barricades and fencing ensure that others do not wander onto construction sites, putting construction workers at risk.
There are several types of barricades and fencing available. The best types to use include reflective and brightly-hued plastic temporary cyclone fencing, plastic safety fencing and portable manhole barricades. These types of barricades and fencing are highly visible, even in poor lighting, durable enough to withstand the elements, and sturdy enough to resist toppling over in winds. Whatever forms of barricades and fencing you use, make sure that it is in accordance with local laws. Make sure, also, that the barricades and fencing are clearly visible to pedestrians and vehicles. It is often a good idea to provide some type of sign to explain the problem - even a simple sign such as “road work” will do - and to alert passers by of the exact danger.
