Gratings: Choosing the Right Gratings Makes a Construction Site Safer
Gratings cover the surfaces on construction sites, providing treads and safe walking for workers. Heavy rains, tall grasses, mud, ice, and other weather and environmental conditions can make walkways on sites very slippery and dangerous, and gratings are especially designed to help protect against slipping and accidents.

Gratings come in many sizes and weights and can be made from fiberglass, rubber, steel, aluminum, or blends of materials. Many gratings have a special surface that helps to prevent slippage. Depending on the manufacturer and designer, this surface can include small raised knobs, small serrated edges, or small pieces of embedded grip. Most gratings are designed to be easily attached to slippery surfaces or to function on their own with no underlying surface. Some gratings can be adjusted in size. Gratings manufacturers also sometimes make gratings-like mats, which are thinner and more flexible and portable in use, but which still offer safety protection.

If you are working at a construction site, good-quality gratings are essential during any weather conditions that can contribute to slips and falls. Gratings are simply an effective way to prevent injury. However, they can be expensive. They must also be used correctly in order to protect. Always be sure to attach the gratings according to manufacturer’s directions, and always ensure that gratings are securely in place before use. After each use, check gratings to make sure that the tread surface has not been smoothed and ensure that no slippery substance has been introduced to the gratings surface. Oil and other slippery substances can undermine the non-slip surface of gratings, so it is important to rid gratings of any such substance before storing the gratings away.
